Cal State San Bernardino Campus Closure

BreakingNews_lExcessive winds are common in north San Bernardino and have occasionally caused Cal State San Bernardino to close campus to protect the safety of students and employees. Heavy winds are also cause for red-flag fire warnings, and when a fire sparked in San Bernardino Mountains, it spread quickly and sent the university’s Office of Public Affairs team into action. As flames encircled three sides of campus, officials not only canceled campus activities and evacuated housing units for the day, but also prepared for an extended closure. Sid Robinson and his team immediately initiated a series of ongoing communications to all impacted constituents, including students, faculty, staff, parents and the community with information about campus closures and status. The team put out notice to all regional news media, focusing on television and radio to help communicate the current status to the community. Messages were updated regularly via voice message, text message, email, website and a special call-in hotline. Campus remained closed for a week before resuming normal operations, but throughout the closure, all audiences were provided with frequent up-to-date status reports and instructions for plans moving forward.
